Italian boxer Angela Carini has stunned the sporting world by pulling out of a fight just 46 seconds into the match, claiming she was hit by a transgender opponent.

The incident has sparked a new debate about fairness in women's sports and who should be allowed to compete in them. Imane Khelif, Carini's opponent, was born biologically male but now identifies as female.

Carini, who is a bronze medallist in the 2019 AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships, sobbed as she withdrew from the bout, saying she was not prepared to fight someone who had been born male.
